Conservative first

Unchecked government expansion limits our freedom as individuals and hinders the growth of the businesses our state’s economy relies on to thrive. Kansans from all walks of life are impacted in very real ways and I am dedicated to standing up for people just like you. During my time in office, I have worked to limit bureaucratic intervention in our day-to-day lives and make government more efficient. I believe in the importance of defending life, strengthening the family, and protecting our most cherished rights. I will continue fighting for you in Topeka.

Campaigns take work. So does governing. Our state needs leadership that understands our communities and puts Kansas first. As Majority Leader, I worked to achieve many things for Kansans and voters showed their support for our efforts by sending another Republican supermajority back to the Kansas House. But the work goes on. As Speaker of the House, I need your help to share our current successes and future goals with our neighbors. Together, we can ensure that Kansas continues to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family!

The Child Advocate Act has now been signed into law! An Office of Child Advocate that is independent from the Administration will go a long way to bring needed accountability and transparency to the child welfare/foster care system in Kansas. #kslegWe’ve all heard heartbreaking stories of children in the care of the state that were sadly failed by the child welfare system. An Office of Child Advocate that is independent of the Governor’s Administration is needed to bring true accountability and advocacy for these vulnerable Kansas kids. After the horrific death of a little girl in a Topeka homeless encampment this summer, Senate President Ty Masterson and I joined forces to renew the call for legislation to create an independent Office of Child Advocate as a top priority this session. The Child Advocate Act establishes an Office of Child Advocate as an independent state agency. No government agency would be allowed to oversee the Child Advocate office and selection will be made without regard to political affiliation to help defend against bias from political ties and pressures. I appreciate the work of Rep. Susan Concannon, Chair of the House Committee on Child Welfare and Foster Care. This new office is sure to bring much-needed advocacy and accountability to the child welfare system in our state. I urge Governor Kelly to sign this important legislation right away!#ksleg

“It is too expensive and not sustainable.” Judging from her remarks about the most recent tax relief bill, it appears Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly is at it again. She might want to check to be sure her veto pen still has some ink left. She has an endless supply of recycled excuses to veto comprehensive tax relief to Kansas, no matter what policy she is considering. Her political rhetoric for each one is always the same: “irresponsible,” “back to Same Brownback,” “reckless,” “the Brownback experiment.” She used the same political fire and brimstone message in her early vetoes, yet the state’s financial condition didn’t plummet into the eternal inferno after most of that policy, with the exception of the most recent two, became law with veto overrides. If you get rid of the smoke and mirrors, the campaign rhetoric and the political spin, you can decipher Kelly’s true stance on relief to the taxpayers of Kansas: “We don’t have time for tax cuts because we’re too busy spending your money.”"If Gov. Kelly is worried about the long-term financial sustainability of the state, maybe she should take a look at some of these handouts first instead of denying Kansans tax relief. Again. It’s far past time for the governor to put her worn-out Brownback rhetoric on the back burner and finally make our Kansas families the top priority. If she feels the cost to the state is too high, I would ask her to consider the cost of refusing relief to the taxpayers while the state sits on nearly $5 billion in reserves. If she truly believes that an extra $40 million in tax relief is reckless and irresponsible, perhaps she should sharpen her budget pencil a little more or rein in her Department of Commerce from handing out exorbitant amounts of your money to the bottomless pit of economic incentive programs."#kslegThe Kansas City StarRead more from the House Chair of Taxation, Rep.
